On Monday, Sept. 22, Gavilan College celebrated a major milestone in its campus transformation: the Topping Out Ceremony for the new Library & Student Resource Center. A tradition in the construction industry, topping out marks the placement of the final steel beam, symbolizing structural completion and honoring the hard work of those who brought the project this far.
Students, staff, and community members gathered to witness the beam, signed by attendees, lifted into place. This collective moment reflected the pride and shared vision that defines the project, capturing the spirit of progress that will shape Gavilan’s future.
The Library & Student Resource Center is one of the signature projects of Gavilan College’s Measure X Bond Program. More than just a new building, it is designed as a modern hub for academic life, technology, and student services. Flexible study areas, welcoming spaces, and expanded resources will foster collaboration and create an environment that meets the diverse needs of today’s students.
This project is about more than providing square footage—it’s about creating opportunity. By combining access to information, technology, and student support in one inclusive and dynamic space, the center will transform how students learn, connect, and thrive on campus.
The new facility is the result of years of planning, collaboration, and commitment by the college and its partners. Guided by a clear vision and fueled by Measure X investments, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design and construction can align with a community college’s mission of access, equity, and excellence
“When we talk about transformative projects, this is exactly what we mean,” said B&D Director and Project Manager Ola Gbadamosi. “The Library & Student Resource Center will be more than a building—it will be a place that embodies Gavilan’s mission and supports students for decades to come. We’re proud to stand alongside the college in bringing this vision to life.”
