B&D President Chris Dunlavey Named to Prestigious American Institute of Architects College of Fellows

February 11, 2016

The 2016 Jury of Fellows from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has elevated Brailsford & Dunlavey president Chris Dunlavey, FAIA, to its prestigious College of Fellows. Comprising only four percent of all AIA members, the Fellowship honors those who have made significant contributions to architecture and society and who have achieved a standard of excellence in their profession. Fellowship is the second highest honor the AIA can bestow upon a member.

“Receiving such recognition from my peers means a great deal,” said Mr. Dunlavey. “B&D was established, in large part, as a vehicle for enhancing communities and making the world a better place through the built environment. Joining the College of Fellows signals how far we’ve come in achieving this goal.”

In his position as president and founding partner of B&D, one of the nation’s foremost program management firms, Mr. Dunlavey has managed the planning, design and construction of more than $30 billion in completed projects. Over the past 23 years he has helped build B&D’s practice from a single office with two people to 10 offices with more than 115 professionals across the U.S. His innovations in project financing and collaborative delivery methods have brought otherwise infeasible projects to reality, and included landmarks in sustainability with the first schools certified under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Schools program, as well as Nationals Park, the country’s first LEED-certified professional sports stadium. Also, Mr. Dunlavey’s thought-provoking speeches and published articles on project feasibility and implementation practices have earned him national recognition as an expert in the field of program management.

In addition to entry into the College of Fellows, Mr. Dunlavey has been recognized throughout his career for contributions and dedication to the industry. In 2005 he was named by Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal as one of “Forty under 40” comprising the most innovative and influential executives in the sports business industry. He’s also received the 2008 Achievement Award from the D.C. Building Industry Association and a 2015 award of gratitude from the U.S. Olympic Committee. Moreover, due in part to Mr. Dunlavey’s hands-on leadership, B&D was named one of the Washington, DC area’s “50 Great Places to Work” by Washingtonian magazine; was named one of The Washington Post’s 150 “Top Workplaces” in the Washington, DC area; received repeated recognition from Inc. magazine as one of the United States’ 5,000 fastest-growing privately held companies; and was named one of ENR’s “Top 50 Program Management Firms.”

"The leadership and information from B&D, and the clarity with which they provide it, brings added credibility to the process and ensures that a range of university stakeholders, including senior leadership and our board, are fully informed for – and confident in – their required decision making.”
