Morgantown Ice Arena

Utilization and Financial Analysis Advisory Services

The City of Morgantown, West Virginia, opened its 30,000 square foot ice arena in the 1970s and in 2017 received $2.5 million for improvements, upgrades, and renovations. Stakeholders in the arena engaged Brailsford & Dunlavey to determine the best use of funds based on present and projected future use.

A series of stakeholder interviews was conducted to ensure the plan would meet the goals of the many programs held at the arena.  Benchmark studies of comparable facilities followed, along with a financial analysis to understand revenue streams and cost centers and identify potential new funding sources.

B&D designed a plan for the arena that:

  • Served as the basis for estimating the operating impacts of adding a new studio ice sheet at the existing site and developing a new facility with two full-sized ice sheets
  • Demonstrated that current and new revenues generated by adding a studio sheet to a modernized ice arena would likely cover operating costs
  • Revealed that revenues generated by a new two-sheet arena would not cover operating costs
  • Plans are moving forward with improvements and upgrades to the existing facility, as well as outreach efforts to potential funding partners for the construction of an additional sheet of studio ice
