San Bernardino,

Student Union Preliminary Assessment And Feasibility Study

California State University, San Bernardino selected B&D in 2012 to prepare a student union preliminary assessment. The purpose of this study was to determine the existing and future needs for a union and to perform a preliminary analysis of the financial impact of initial concepts. Our scope of work included focus groups and stakeholder interviews with 120 students, faculty, and staff to gain qualitative information regarding the Union’s current use and any unmet needs. Peer institutions were analyzed through the use of our internal database to understand how the university’s Santos Manuel Student Union compared to others. Furthermore, a preliminary financial impact analysis was developed for each concept of our plan. We identified a strong desire for enhanced dining and retail options. Additional gathering spaces also had appeal, along with more service options such as a post office and a satellite bookstore. As a result, we presented the university with three expansion/renovation concepts, each with varying square footage dedicated to food service, lounges, meeting/support rooms, and seating. A preliminary financial report was prepared for all three concepts.
