Student Union Needs Assessment, Feasibility Study, And Programming

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville selected B&D in 1999 to conduct a detailed needs assessment, a feasibility study, and facility programming for the renovation of the Morris University Center (MUC). Our scope of work included reviewing the existing drawings and site plan; a detailed market analysis including a written survey tool, focus groups, and peer school review; the development of a detailed facilities program; and a financial analysis. We worked with Solomon Cordwell Buenz Architects, who conducted a facility analysis, schematic plans, and a cost opinion analysis. Understanding the importance of the MUC as a quality-of-life facility and the role it played in the future development of the university’s campus community, we recommended the university undertake extensive renovations and additions to the MUC, creating a contemporary and comprehensive facility that would better meet campus needs into the future. The proposed plan included a dynamic revitalization of the facility that would utilize existing space more efficiently, create a landmark presence in center of campus, and take advantage of the beautiful views. The renovated spaces include an expanded food court, computer labs, study and social rooms, updated conference rooms, and student organization space. The $20 million renovation to the 200,000 square foot MUC was completed in October 2003.
