Student Union Needs Analysis

B&D was retained by the University of Connecticut in 1997 to examine the needs and preferences for developing a newly renovated student union on campus. In addition, we were asked to determine the extent to which a newly designed student union could fit within an expanded version of the existing building’s envelope, while understanding the union’s impact on the university’s administrative and staffing efforts. Our scope of work included a review of university materials and planning documents, and focus groups and interviews with university administrators and constituent groups. After we reported our findings, the university agreed with our recommendations and assigned WTW Architects to proceed with developing design schemes. The university proceeded with a 99,000 SF renovation and a 76,500 SF addition to the student union. This $70 million project was completed in October 2006.
