Student Union Merger Plan

At California State University, Stanislaus the Associated Students Inc. and the University Student Union Inc. were acting with a shared interim director and realized there were better ways for the two unions to serve the students. They wanted to explore merger options and, in 2006, asked B&D to assist in that effort. Our scope of work included a review of existing documents, a series of face-to-face meetings with key stakeholders, a strategic value analysis of each organization, a review of their financial histories, and an ongoing series of meetings with leadership to ensure constant communication between the unions. We presented three organizational models: the Corporate Fusion Merger, the Functional Merger, and the Modified Functional Merger. We recommended the Modified approach in which senior management and some administrative functions could be consolidated. This would necessitate a formal Memorandum of Understanding, and budgets that would be developed with each organization’s mission in mind.
