Student Union Feasibility Study, Detailed Programming, And Financial Analysis

A new student union had been a campus priority at Bowie State for several years, as the existing Wiseman University Centre was growing increasingly outdated and was limited to serving primarily as a cafeteria and event center. With the planned increase of the on-campus residential population as well as the university’s designation as one of four “growth institutions” within the University of Maryland System, an enhanced student union was needed not just to help strengthen the overall sense of campus community and support recruitment/retention efforts, but also to ensure that basic campus services had the appropriate capacity. The university engaged B&D to develop a feasibility analysis, a financial model, and a project program for this development. As a result of our studies we recommended the site, provided a 10-year pro forma showing student fees and revenue needs, and outlined ongoing operational costs. The University of Maryland System approved the union concept as developed. The 96,777 GSF, $31 million Student Union opened in 2013. Earning LEED Gold certification, the facility includes a theater/lecture hall, a bookstore, multipurpose rooms, game rooms, and dining spaces.
