Student Union Feasibility and Referendum Advisory Services

Client Opportunity

  • Examine the potential of replacing a union facility that was undersized, outdated, and lacked a sense of vibrancy
  • Seek appropriate recommendations for a new union’s final mix of program elements
  • Assess the project in terms of quantified student demand and obtain recommendations regarding a student referendum

B&D Process

  • Conducted market research, including student / faculty / staff focus groups, intercept interviews, and a student survey
  • Created a demand model and building program for the proposed project
  • Presented project plan to 100 students and 15 student project ambassadors to prepare students for a referendum on a possible fee increase
  • Managed the design-build team selection

Project Highlights

  • Detailed student preferences revealed through study included outdoor seating, computer-equipped lounge areas, and mailing and banking services
  • Largest demand was for a food court, coffee house, and a larger study / lounge space
  • Project won student support for development of a 109,000 square foot, $38 million student union
  • New facility houses a two-story bookstore, a food court, a 329-seat theater, and student organization spaces
  • Project achieved LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council
