Student Union Feasibility Analysis, Program Of Architectural Requirements, Business Planning, And Program Review; Retail Foodservice Rfp Response Review

In 2003 B&D was selected by the University of Nevada, Reno to examine the feasibility of building a new student union as part of its Mid-Campus Master Plan. The university’s intent was to develop a project that would become the new hub for student life. Along with the development of the New Knowledge Center, the Lombardi Recreation Center expansion, and new academic facilities, this new student union would represent the university’s commitment to enhancing the overall student quality of life to help improve campus community. To test the feasibility of building the union, we conducted a visioning session, developed a needs assessment and outline program, and performed a market analysis. The analysis included interviews with user groups and students, a demographic analysis, focus groups, and a student survey in which 78% of respondents viewed a new union as a moderate-to-high priority. When the university decided to proceed with the plan, we were hired again to develop a detailed program of architectural requirements and assist in selecting the project architect. In addition, we were asked to develop a union business plan in 2004, and to conduct an RFP response review for retail foodservice operations in 2006. The new 167,000 SF, $63 million Joe Crowley Student Union opened in 2007. In 2012 we analyzed the Union’s program and recommended program modifications that would further enhance the facility.
