Student Union Design Review And Program Review

Northern Kentucky University hired Omni Architects to design a new student union on campus for its nearly 12,000 students. In turn, B&D was selected in the beginning of 2004 to work as a design consultant, with overall responsibilities that included design review and program review for the union, along with assisting on operating issues such as foodservice and retail. Through analysis that encompassed staffing and management implications, space requirements, adjacencies, and program compliance, we shared our expertise at design meetings and provided hands-on assistance to Omni and the university through the design development process. The new $37 million Student Union opened in 2008. Comprising 144,000 square feet, the facility includes about 30,000 square feet of foodservice space, a grand ballroom seating 600, meeting rooms, lounge space, and office space for numerous campus organizations. And in 2009, the facility earned a merit award from the Kentucky Society of Architects.
