Student Housing Renovation Programming, Architect Selection Support, And Design Review; Student Center Improvements Review

In 2010, Buena Vista planned to renovate its Pierce and White residence halls, both of which had been built more than 50 years earlier. The renovation had to provide an integrated living and learning environment to improve learning outcomes, student recruitment and retention, and overall student satisfaction. The university retained B&D to provide programming and preliminary implementation services for this renovation and tasked us with helping to select an architect, interview stakeholders, lead student focus groups, develop a program, and provide design support during the renovation process. Our program made each hall less dense and added new community spaces to encourage interaction among students, faculty, and staff. We reviewed the architect’s schematic designs to help guide the successful implementation of the project. In addition, several space planning options were presented to the university for the 19,000 SF Lage Student Center renovation, including the addition of a convenience store, a game room, and informal gathering spaces. The students expressed a strong interest in LEED design elements, which were included in our housing and Student Center concepts. Although the renovated Center would continue to include both social and administrative activities, the proposed design called for only student activities on the first floor, thereby maximizing the welcoming effect of the Center’s entrance. We also developed detailed construction budgets for both renovation projects. This $13.1 million renovation to Pierce and White Residence Halls was completed in August 2012 and immediately became LEED certified.
