Student Housing Financial Analysis

Appalachian State University faced the risk of losing student housing inventory over the short term as it planned to reconfigure 19 of its residence halls, whether by renovation, demolition or new construction. To respond to this challenge the university, along with Perkins+Will, hired B&D to do a system-wide financial analysis and plan for the on-campus housing inventory focusing on freshmen and sophomores. The financial model we developed enabled them to sequence taking the new, renovated, and demolished residence halls off-line and bringing them back on-line without losing the inventory needed to support student needs. This model became a strategic resource for the university as it successfully reconfigured its housing from 2007 to 2010.
