Newman Development Group

Student Housing Feasibility Study

In 2013 Newman Development Group engaged B&D to conduct a feasibility study for a new off-campus student housing project to be located adjacent to the SUNY Oneonta campus. The project, with full support of the town, was planned in response to the university’s enrollment growth and corresponding lack of adequate student housing. Our scope of work included focus groups, intercept interviews, an off-campus housing analysis, and an Internet-based student survey. In addition, a presentation and Q&A session were held with a group consisting of on- and off-campus residents of varying age, gender, and classification to address housing issues and needs. We then developed a demand model to quantify the target market for the project. As a result, we presented Newman Development Group with quantitative and qualitative data to support demand for a residence in two- and three-bedroom configurations. Specific desired amenities also were revealed through B&D’s research, including an exercise gym, computer lab, study lounge, and café. As a result, Newman Development proceeded with design and construction of the 330-bed Hillside Commons, which opened in 2014.
