Student Center Feasibility Analysis And Programming

In 2001 Christopher Newport University wanted a detailed needs assessment, feasibility study, and programming outline done relative to the redevelopment of its student center. The university retained B&D to perform this work and our scope of work included: reviewing the existing drawings and site plan; a market analysis that included surveys, focus groups and interviews; a peer school review; a detailed facilities program; and a financial analysis. Our efforts showed clear support for additional retail, food, meeting, and social gathering spaces. We proposed building a new center adjacent to the “Great Lawn” of the university—its landmark entrance. As a result, the 120,000 SF, $35 million David Student Union opened in 2006 with an outdoor plaza, greater social and educational areas, retail offerings, ballroom and meeting spaces, new food service, study lounges, a games center, and integrated technology. It went on to receive an Outstanding Design award from American School & University magazine.
