Washington Latin Public Charter School

School Renovation And Addition Program Management; Gymnasium Program Management

In 2012, situated amongst three facilities, Washington Latin Public Charter School faced a growing need to expand and consolidate its middle and upper school on one campus. Upon award of an old public school building, Washington Latin set off on the challenging task of moving into the building within one year for the start of the 2013-14 school year. B&D was hired to provide program management services through the design and construction of its new home. Specific responsibilities included management of professional selections for architecture, construction management, and other services as needed; participation in design reviews with user groups and value engineering charettes; management of the project budget; management of the approvals and permitting process; and participation in on-site construction meetings and walk-thrus. The 67,000 SF, $13.5 million renovation and addition project opened for the start of the 2013-2014 school year. The facility includes classrooms, a library, a multipurpose room, a reheat kitchen, and administrative offices and suites for middle and upper school staff.

Washington Latin re-engaged us in 2014 to support the final phase of the project by providing program management services for a new gymnasium. Opening in the summer of 2016, the gymnasium will include a full-size court, a fitness center, and locker rooms. It will also be one of the first projects in the United States—and the first in the District of Columbia—to utilize a Cross Laminated Timber structural system.
