Recreation Center Demand And Financial Analysis

In 1998 Oregon State University retained the services of B&D to evaluate the impact of proposed improvements to Dixon Recreation Center on campus life, gauge student support for the expansion, identify opportunities to improve current facilities, and determine student support for the fees that would fund any improvements. Our study included: focus groups; a review of existing conditions and documentation; a demographic and financial analysis; and a space demand study. Based on demand and our financial analyses, we recommended that the university should focus on providing additional weight and fitness space, gymnasia, wellness areas, outdoor programs, climbing walls, and social space. Our work also revealed that students approved of fee increases that would support the required improvements. Thus, the $20 million Dixon Recreation Center expansion and renovation was completed in May 2004, adding 60,000 SF. It received a NIRSA Outstanding Sports Facility award in 2005.
