Recreation And Athletics Master Plan

In 2015 B&D was engaged by Columbia University’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education to develop a Campus Recreation and Athletics Master Plan. The primary objective of the planning effort was to quantify the current and future facility needs of the campus community with regard to physical education, campus recreation, and intercollegiate athletics. In addition, we were asked to provide recommendations regarding how best to optimize the Department’s existing facilities and resources to effectively achieve its strategic objectives related to lifelong skill development, stress mitigation, and social engagement. We utilized a series of proprietary methodologies and analytical tools, including a Strategic Asset Value analysis to establish the strategic priorities and vision of the Department. The analytical process included a competitive context / peer benchmarking, analysis and a facility utilization and schedule analysis, while a web-based survey was used to quantify demand and characterize current perceptions and future preferences of students, faculty, and staff related to campus recreation, physical education, and intercollegiate athletics. Following the visioning and predictive analytics efforts, we completed space programming and a financial analysis to determine the most appropriate way for the university to elevate the facilities, programs, and service offerings associated with the Department.
