Paul Lawrence Dunbar Senior High School — New School Program Management

The District of Columbia’s Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization undertook a project to modernize 120 of its schools either through renovation or demolition and new construction. The District retained B&D to provide program management and project oversight for the projects, and the work began in 2007. The Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School construction project features an armory reminiscent of the old Dunbar that connects the academic, administrative, auditorium, and athletic spaces and fosters more frequent interaction between students and staff. The design allows for ease of circulation and facilitates security through a single entrance. Visual transparency is maximized to let natural light into the classrooms. The 280,000 square foot, $128.2 million School opened in September 2013 with a capacity for 1,100 students. Its LEED features led to a 29% reduction in energy costs. The new field, track, and outdoor athletic areas were completed in 2014. The project went on to receive the following industry recognition:
