Multi-College Student Centers Survey

In 2004 the Massachusetts State College Building Authority retained B&D to conduct a multi-college survey to translate survey-measured demand for various campus center activities into spatial requirements. The objective of this project was to prioritize these activities and recommend sizes for a variety of spaces based on their importance to four of the state’s colleges. We conducted demographic analyses through surveys of targeted market segments and developed a statistically valid projection over time. We projected the frequencies and times of use for various student center facilities, then discounted the results by multiplying them by a discount factor to project total actual demand for each activity. Finally, the model translated the demand numbers into quantities of spaces needed. This analysis was completed separately for students and faculty/staff, each group having distinct usage preferences. We were then able to provide the Authority with a comprehensive demand-based market analysis to improve the quality of student centers on their four campuses.
