Brown University

Fitness And Aquatics Center Peer Review

In 2008 Brown University was in the design phase for two new athletic facilities—a fitness center and an aquatics center. These facilities were part of a larger $46 million development that would form a new recreation/athletics quad. The university hired B&D to review the designs to ensure efficiency and best use of the space. After our review, we recommended the appropriate placement of workout-related equipment, a greater clearance between floors to accommodate taller users and increase ventilation, stricter adherence to the state’s health codes relative to locker rooms, and an increase in safety and security equipment. Designed to be energy efficient and meet LEED standards, the new Jonathan Nelson Fitness Center and the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center opened in 2012.
