Faculty/staff Club Market Analysis And Management Advisory Services

In 2004 the University of Chicago retained B&D to conduct a facility and operational assessment of its Quadrangle Club (the club), which serves the university community as a faculty/staff club and serves the Hyde Park community as a social cub. The club had alternated between periods of financial stability and reliance on subsidization from the university. At the time, it had to contend with aging membership, increased operating costs, and challenges to its mission. It had not been self-supporting of late and service was declining. Before applying for a grant to cover the cost of upgrades, the club wanted the results of our assessment. Our work included: analysis of existing facilities; benchmarking with similar facilities; a survey of existing and potential customers; and operational and financial analyses. We concluded that the university should change the club’s governance model so that either the GM or the Board report to a university representative who would provide operational oversight. We also recommended the membership model be changed to be less exclusive, the menu offerings be more diverse, and a marketing strategy be put in place to increase awareness.
