Facilities Master Plan; Recreation Center Expansion Programming And Financial Analysis

In 2002 Cal Poly was embarking on a plan to enhance the overall campus community and wanted to be sure it had a master plan for the Associated Students, Inc. facilities, which included the Recreation Center, the University Union, the Children’s Center, and the outdoor recreation fields. B&D was retained to provide a detailed market and financial analysis, and program concept development. We interviewed staff from the various departments and tapped student input through focus groups and surveys. We also analyzed the university’s competitive environment. Our findings indicated that the current union and recreation center could not fulfill the university’s goals and vision and that these inadequacies would only increase as the enrollment grew. We provided the university with a master plan to improve the facilities by providing the appropriate social, cultural, and recreational spaces, and upon receipt of this plan it began examining funding options. We were retained again in 2007 to develop a program and financial analysis for a Recreation Center expansion/renovation project. The $72 million project was completed in 2012. The building received an Outstanding Sports Facility Award from NIRSA in 2013.
