ShoWare Center – WHL Seattle Thunderbirds

Events Center Feasibility Study And Economic Impact Analysis

In 2006 B&D was engaged by the city of Kent, Washington to perform a market study, financial analysis, and economic benefits analysis for a new downtown events center that had the Seattle Thunderbirds hockey team as its assumed primary tenant. We completed demographics and economic indicator analyses, a comparable and competing facility analysis, and a series of interviews. We then developed a financial model to evaluate the economic benefits of the project. Our work revealed that the proposed facility was in high demand, and we projected it would generate nearly $6 million in revenues before debt service and profit sharing with the hockey team, and have a $20 million annual impact on the local economy. After receiving approvals from the state and local governments, the new facility broke ground and the new 6,500-seat, $67 million ShoWare Center opened in 2009.
