District Of Columbia Public Schools Targeted Repairs Program Management

Brailsford & Dunlavey was selected in the summer of 2007 to provide oversight of multiple construction managers during the facility improvements for 33 District of Columbia public schools. Serving as part of a joint venture with McKissack & McKissack, B&D and its team resolved more than 4,000 open work orders to ensure that each school was stabilized and renovated in time for the upcoming academic year. Encompassing more than $27 million in project costs, the open work orders consisted of environmental remediation, water fountain cooler installations and repairs, electrical improvements, roofing repairs, HVAC upgrades/repairs, site improvements, and interior finishes / cosmetic improvements. Our oversight consisted of meeting school-specific needs to maintain operational facilities without requiring comprehensive modernization. A typical project included developing a scope of needs, preparing an estimated budget, procuring a construction manager, overseeing construction, and completing each project on time. In the end, B&D succeeded in overcoming the enormous challenge of addressing thousands of items in an aging school system with limited resources and under tight schedules. The targeted repairs project was extraordinarily successful, as it ensured that these 33 schools would remain operational for the coming years.
