Dining Hall Detailed Program Document

In 2006, in response to the increased demands placed on existing on-campus dining facilities by an expanding residential population, the University of Virginia’s College at Wise was pursuing the design and construction of a new state-of-the-art dining center. B&D was retained to develop a dining hall program document in response to the college’s desire to develop this new facility. The objectives of the project were to determine the ideal mix of spaces, the size of these spaces, and their relative locations within the proposed facility. We engaged in interviews and conversations with university administrators, food service management, and students to arrive at an ideal program of spaces. The resulting document included a range of facilities and spaces that were determined to be the most appropriate and most effective from an operational standpoint, and which would have the most positive impact on campus life. The program document became the university’s primary means of communicating the project’s requirements to the design team. As the building plan evolved through the design phase, it also served as the measure against which design success could be evaluated. The $9.6 million dining hall opened in November 2009.
