Cultural Centers Market Study And Conceptual Programming

In 2008 B&D was hired by the University of Iowa to provide planning services for four of its cultural centers. We were tasked to review the existing condition of the centers, review similar centers at peer institutions, and develop preliminary concepts for the renovation or construction of new facilities to enhance the quality of life for under-represented students. We held visioning sessions with the university’s leadership; conducted interviews, surveys, and focus groups with faculty, students, staff, and competitive schools; and identified models that most closely aligned with the university’s strategic direction and demographics. We determined that the current cultural centers were inadequate to fulfill the university’s goals for student support and reflected an outdated model. We then developed a preliminary concept for the university to further review and vet which addressed key needs and complemented other cultural and campus initiatives. The university then initiated preliminary discussions for further detailed programming.
