Hampden Township

Community Center Feasibility Analysis

In 2000 B&D was retained by the Hampden Township Board of Commissioners to complete a feasibility study for a new community center. The township is a growing suburban region near Mechanicsburg and Harrisburg and wanted to determine whether there would be support for developing a recreation-focused community center. Our scope of work included: a market analysis; architectural programming; financial and business planning; a demographic analysis; interviews with political, community, and business leaders; and a survey of the local population. Results of that work produced evidence of overwhelming support for a facility with a gym, indoor track, pools, a fitness center, meeting rooms, a teen/senior center, a library/tech center, and banquet facilities. A conceptual design and financial/business plan were then developed. Despite the shortage of recreation facilities in the area and community support for the new facility, political pressure from a local private health club owner ultimately split the Township Board, and the project has not been built.
