Campus Redevelopment Programming And Design Support

B&D, in partnership with RATIO Architects, was engaged by Lincoln’s ChalleNGe Academy in 2011 to provide programming and design consulting support services for the renovation of its campus facilities. The academy is housed on a former Air Force Base, and its leadership envisioned the replacement facilities that would bring it up to date technologically and academically, provide appropriate recreational space, be LEED Silver accredited, and create a first-class environment—all within a simple and functional design framework. Our scope of work included participating in a design charrette with academy staff, National Guard staff, and the Capital Development Board to understand each party’s vision for the new campus. Program needs derived from this charrette were then reconciled with the design, and additional workshops were held with the users of the individual buildings: education, athletics, dining, maintenance, and housing. Using this information, we established initial space parameters and detailed program elements. This 141,457 SF, $38.1 million campus redevelopment is slated for completion in 2015. The project entails replacing five World War II-era buildings with new student housing, dining, recreation, and academic facilities.
