Campus Master Plan And Student Union / Administrative Building Programming

In 2004 the University of Mary Washington wanted a high quality, ‘one-stop-shopping’ student services facility and decided to achieve this through a transformation of Lee Hall (“the hall”), a classical Georgian building recognized as a historic campus symbol. The university wanted the hall to be a place for community building that promoted connection, openness, and accessibility. B&D was retained to determine which departments could remain in the hall and which outside programs could be relocated there. Our work included interviews, focus groups, and working sessions with students and administrators, followed by development of an outline program. The program called for a blend of service departments and social gathering spaces, along with a ballroom. The $11.4 million Lee Hall renovation and expansion was completed in 2009.
