Campus Master Plan

In July 2013, Ball State University contracted B&D and SmithGroupJJR to develop a campus master plan to guide Ball State in development and decision making for future campus needs. The university had just completed its very successful Education Redefined: Strategic Plan 2007-2012. Now it was embarking on a new course titled Education Redefined 2.0: Advancing Indiana, a strategic plan that would guide the university’s actions from 2012 to 2017. We were tasked with managing the student life component of the master plan, including on-campus housing, dining, recreation, and athletic facilities. Our approach consisted of off-campus analyses, benchmarking, a student survey, demand-based programming, and financial analyses. Options for new construction, renovations, funding strategies, and operations were presented, while a gap analysis and outline program for new or renovated spaces were completed. The resulting plan included a roadmap for the following campus developments: student apartments located near The Village commercial/residential district; science buildings in a new East Quad; a new aquatics center; a parking garage north of Teachers College; and a green space (“East Mall”) connecting The Village with the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.
