Young Harris,

Campus Center Feasibility Study And Architectural Selection

In 2008 Young Harris College engaged B&D to complete a feasibility study for a new campus center facility project. Having recently received accreditation as a four-year, baccalaureate degree-granting institution, the college projected its campus population to nearly double in the coming years. In order to meet present and future students’ needs, the college tasked us to determine the need for, and feasibility of, a centralized campus center to include the primary campus library, primary campus dining facility, student union spaces, and large events spaces. To meet this objective, we completed several distinct analyses, including facilitating a strategic visioning session with the college’s administration, conducting focus groups with students, reviewing the campus population models, and creating and analyzing the results of a student survey.

Upon completion of each of these activities, we created an outline program of spaces, which was reviewed with the college’s project committee. We also completed a detailed financial analysis, including a preliminary estimate of costs associated with the construction and operation of the new facility to determine the revenue necessary to operate the building. Additionally, the college retained us to manage the selection of a design firm for the new campus center. We managed a Request for Proposals process, facilitated the interview process, and led the project committee’s deliberations toward selecting a preferred candidate for the project. This 121,000 SF facility opened in 2014, is certified LEED Gold, and won Best Project in Higher Education/Research from ENR Southeast in 2015.
