Bookstore Market Analysis And Financial Review

In 2011 St. Ambrose University selected Brailsford & Dunlavey to conduct a market study of the SAU Bookstore. We conducted stakeholder interviews, focus group sessions, an assessment of current store operations, a student and faculty/staff survey, and an analysis of current collegiate bookstore trends and benchmarks. In addition, we analyzed the financial performance of the Bookstore to understand how this operation compared to industry standards for similarly sized stores. As a result, we recommended that the Gottlieb Room within the Rogalski Center should be examined as a potential location, as this was an underutilized space that already was heavily visited by students. The existing facility’s size and sales (on a per student measurement) were comparable to industry standards for similarly sized stores; however, its design and layout were dated and inefficient, limiting its functionality and appeal. In addition, we encouraged the university to explore third-party management of the store to mitigate financial risks and increase management resources.
