St. Christopher’s School

Athletics Master Plan, Program Of Architectural Requirements, And Program Management

In 1999 St. Christopher’s School contracted B&D to provide a master plan for the school’s athletic facilities. This study for the K-12, all-boys independent school was initiated to assess the nature and extent of any renovations and/or additions to athletic facilities. Our specific responsibilities included an evaluation of existing facilities, development of building program options, site analysis, and detailed programming in preparation for architectural design. In conducting a competitive context analysis of peer schools, we discovered that while the school’s facilities were consistent in size to peer schools, the age of facilities and land area available for fields limited the quantity and diversity of its offerings. The resulting project included renovations and additions to current facilities along with improvements to fields and tennis courts that were part of a greater campus master plan. After assisting through design, we were retained as an advisory owner’s representative for the construction of Phase I of the athletic center and for separate construction contracts for the outdoor track facility. We also provided assistance with the management of the quality, schedule, and cost of the project, which resulted in a well-received building that came in under budget. The 32,000 SF Kemper Athletic and Fitness Center was completed in 2003, while the 53,000 SF Bolling Field House opened in 2006. In between, the school completed renovations to the 24,000 SF Scott Gymnasium.
