Athletics And Recreation Needs Assessment

In 1998 Northeastern University selected B&D to complete a needs assessment for the development of a new outdoor recreation facility as a component of its comprehensive campus master planning process. We evaluated the current athletic and recreational sports facilities at the university to determine the extent to which the appropriate quantity and quality of indoor and outdoor facilities existed to support formal and informal recreation and intercollegiate athletics. Our scope of work included an analysis of existing conditions, a competitive context analysis, an evaluation of strategic priorities, and a preliminary program analysis. We also coordinated efforts with various university administrators and staff, and the university’s master planners. We delivered a set of programmatic recommendations based on university demographics, on-campus recreation and athletics needs compared to benchmark institutions, and spatial constraints of the urban campus. Ultimately, our recommendations demonstrated their relevance to furthering the university’s mission, reinforcing its institutional values, responding to its institutional commitments, and improving its market position.
