Athletic/recreation/arena Program Analysis & Needs Assessment

In 1999 George Mason University selected B&D to determine the extent to which its existing athletic and recreation facilities met campus needs, and to quantify the size and nature of facilities that should be built or renovated. We were asked to focus in particular on its Patriot Center, the on-campus arena that was home to its men’s and women’s basketball programs. Our work included: analyzing the athletic department’s strategic goals; examining existing athletic and recreation facilities; analyzing indoor and outdoor athletic and recreation facilities; assessing revenue-generating opportunities; reviewing competitive facilities; developing outline architectural programs; and reviewing site possibilities for expanded facilities. Our study was not intended to provide specific renovation or new construction information, but because we had enlisted the help of architectural firm Ellerbe Becket for concepts early on, our documents provided a transition into a more in-depth analysis and planning. As a result, in 2006 construction began on a $10 million renovation to the Patriot Center and was completed in 2009

George Mason has retained consultants to create a 10-year master plan for athletic and recreational programs and facilities on the Fairfax Campus.
