Athletic/recreation Center Programming

In 1994 Sacred Heart University recognized the need to improve and expand its current offerings of recreational and athletic program spaces. As a result, it received a schematic design for a new center whose cost exceeded the university’s budget. B&D was then retained to conduct a programmatic audit and participate in developing a facility to meet the university’s priorities within the $14 million budget. Our work included: meetings with senior administrators to set strategic priorities; a competitive context analysis and tours of peer institutions; a student survey to assess demand; a space utilization plan; and a program costing model. As a result, the William H. Pitt Health and Recreation Center opened in 1997. The $17.5 million, 141,000 SF facility includes basketball and tennis courts, a weight room, a health clinic, meeting rooms, and office spaces.
