Athletic Facilities Programming

In the fall of 1995, B&D was retained by the Trinity Valley School to assist the architecture firm Perkins+Will in planning new athletic facilities at the school’s proposed new campus. Our assignment included reviewing athletic policies and refining the building program and athletic field allocations. These tasks were achieved through a competitive context analysis of selected peer institutions; an analysis of preliminary building and field layouts; detailed interviews with administrators, coaches, and students; and an analysis of both physical education and competitive athletic scheduling requirements. Our scope of work also included a workshop wherein differences between the school’s published mission statement and athletic policies were discussed and resolved, enabling the school to achieve a comprehensive long-term architectural and philosophical solution uniquely responsive to its goals. Maximizing the school’s long-term flexibility, the resulting building and athletic fields design included two double gymnasiums; eight tennis courts; five fields for football, soccer, and field hockey; three diamonds for baseball and softball; and a lighted stadium with an eight-lane track. The project concept was approved and the new campus was constructed, with the new 60,000 gross square foot athletic complex opening in 1998.
