Athletic Facilities Programming Assessment

By 2008 Spartanburg Day School was pursuing a visionary capital campaign to upgrade many of its campus facilities to support the existing programming and accommodate a targeted increase in enrollment. Since the athletics and physical education facilities were specifically identified for a capital project, the school hired B&D to assess the current facilities and identify an appropriate strategy for improvement. We conducted a benchmarking analysis of regional schools and reviewed the athletics opportunities/participation levels in all three seasons to determine utilization patterns. We also created a three-dimensional graphic tool to show the potential new elements. The resulting concept involved an addition to the existing structure with a new gym and enhancements to the weight room, locker rooms, offices, lobby, concessions, and multipurpose rooms. The school agreed to implement the additions in the following order: (1) construction of a lobby area and gym; (2) renovation of support spaces around the existing gym and new construction of support spaces; and (3) renovation of the existing gym.
