Athletic Facilities Master Plan

In 2011 B&D was hired to develop and refine a preferred concept for indoor and outdoor athletic components at Norfolk Academy as part of an overall campus master planning effort. We were tasked with reviewing existing conditions of athletic facilities and fields, conducting a space utilization analysis, developing an outline program, refining project concepts, generating cost estimates, and creating a phased implementation plan. The following had to be considered in the plan: campus safety, sports performance, capacity, iconic spaces, teaching opportunities, gathering spaces, access, and functionality. We modeled current utilization by season and completed a sensitivity analysis to identify scheduling impacts on demand. We proposed a concept with one artificial turf field, an additional baseball diamond and softball diamond, and a new indoor field house. We also determined that an additional 2,400 SF of weight and fitness space was required to meet students’ needs.
