Athletic Facilities Master Plan, Usage/revenue Analysis, Program Of Architectural Requirements, FF&E Support, And Advisory Services

B&D was retained in 1995 as the sports facility consultant to a planning team developing a master plan for the athletic and recreation facilities for the National Cathedral Foundation. One of the three schools in the foundation was the National Cathedral School (NCS) and our work involved assisting NCS in defining the mission of its athletic department, translating that into program recommendations, and defining the facility needs. Its mission turned out to be to set a national standard for excellence in women’s athletics. We completed extensive research with students, parents, administrators, educators, and trustees to determine their needs. A program document was then prepared that defined the facility’s needs in a field house, and we assisted the school through its design and FF&E selection. In 2002 the 99,000 square foot, $26 million Agnes Cochran Underwood Athletic Center opened and received a Facility of Merit award from Athletic Business magazine. Then in 2003, we were again retained to study how that new center could be used to promote the school’s image, expand recruitment, and generate revenue. It was determined that a new role of Director of Athletic Facilities and Auxiliary Programs was integral to the success of those efforts, and we managed the process of identifying an appropriate candidate to fill that position.
