Athletic Facilities Master Plan

In 2006 Kingswood-Oxford School selected B&D—in conjunction with Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott—to develop an athletic facilities master plan. At the time, the school had an opportunity to acquire a 3.5-acre science center site directly contiguous to its main campus. The school’s main campus was tightly bounded by a mature, densely populated residential community, and this additional acreage would provide needed growth opportunities. Faced with this expansion opportunity, the school wished to evaluate all of its athletic facilities in order to make the best informed use of the impending land acquisition. A critical component of the master plan was the research and analysis of program demand and facility needs. We pursued these findings through extensive background research, a utilization analysis, and benchmarking. The team also developed an outline program of athletic spaces and a cost and implementation model. In response to the school’s identified needs and in recognition of primary and secondary scenario drivers, we composed a menu of five projects that the school could implement over time: upgrade and modify the east campus playing fields; build a new aquatic center and provide a relocated maintenance facility; extend the outdoor playing field; provide an expanded and enhanced gymnasium and indoor athletics complex; and provide a centralized facility for tennis and squash.
