Athletic Facilities Feasibility Study, Financial Analysis, And Program Of Architectural Requirements

Woodward Academy is one of the nation’s premier college preparatory schools. It has a strong athletics program with a rich history, but by 2006, with an enrollment of 2,850 students, the program had become constrained by the limitations of its facilities. In October of that year, the Academy engaged B&D and Perkins+Will Architects to research, evaluate, and define recommended improvements to its athletics facilities. Of special importance was improving indoor-outdoor connections, enhancing the “game day” experience, fostering maximum value for any facility investments, and reinforcing the overall campus master plan. Through a coordinated process of information gathering, analysis, and recommendation formulation, B&D and Perkins+Will were able to address the academy’s priorities while still ensuring that the school’s overall mission, goals, and objectives for its athletics program were met. Our scope of work included: review of the current condition of facilities; analysis of the space needs based on the athletics schedule; capital budget projections; site plan analysis; conceptual blocking and stacking; and financial analysis. Our resulting Program Document of Architectural Requirements was given to the design team and was used to help document the project’s objectives. The new 100,000 SF, $32 million athletic and fitness center opened in 2010.
