St. Mary’s County,

Athletic Facilities Advisory Services

In 2009 St. Mary’s County Public Schools selected B&D to provide athletics advisory services for three high school campuses. We evaluated the existing conditions of each campus, including the following athletic facilities: football stadium, baseball field, softball field, soccer field, lacrosse field, and field hockey field. In addition, we evaluated all support facilities including locker rooms, restrooms, concession stands, and storage areas. To support this assessment, we interviewed school administrators and met with facilities staff to identify existing conditions challenges. With an understanding of the existing facilities, we then identified all preferred improvement opportunities for each athletics campus as well as the existing physical assets that could be leveraged in the improvement plan. Based on the defined improvement opportunities, we developed detailed scoping documents for each athletics campus that included both immediate and future improvement opportunities. We also prepared a cost-benefit analysis of installing artificial turf surfaces on the competition fields within the football stadiums. Upon completing this assignment, we were retained to develop capital budgets and phasing plans for each athletics campus. Next, the St. Mary’s school board initiated fundraising for athletic upgrades at the three high schools: $4.5 million for Chopticon, $4.5 million for Great Mills, and $7.6 million for Leonardtown.
