Athletic Center Program Of Architectural Requirements And Program Management

In 2007 B&D was hired by Landon School to help identify a strategy for addressing its physical space needs. The school had always been known for its outstanding athletic accomplishments and competition, but it sports facility, the Barton Center, had not seen improvements since the 1970s. Through research and interviews we came to understand the school’s specific needs and the resulting Program Document of Architectural Requirements recommended a renovation of the existing facility to better meet the school’s long term goals. Our work included: space programming, capital budgeting, architect/engineer selection, construction manager selection, design management, and construction oversight. The approved project included a 56,000 SF renovation that included two gymnasiums, office space, an equipment room, locker rooms, and an athletic training room. This $5.7 million renovation opened in 2009, on time and on budget, and in 2010 it won an Associated Builders and Contractors ‘Excellence in Construction’ award. Then in 2013, we were retained to manage Phase 2 the Barton Athletic Center renovation. This phase included renovations to the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools’ locker rooms; coaches’ offices; teaming room; and taping/treatment room. Bathrooms were modernized to meet ADA requirements. We also oversaw the replacement of lockers, and of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and sprinkler systems to meet code. Finally, we managed the installation of new finishes, fixtures, and audio-visual equipment. The $1.5 million renovation was completed on schedule in 2014.
