Athletic And Recreation Facilities Strategic Analysis And Outline Architectural Program

In 2002 Macalester College selected B&D to perform a strategic assessment and develop an outline architectural program for improvements to its athletic and recreation facilities. The college wanted a program that would foster state-of-the-art competition and training fields for its athletic programs, and recreation and wellness facilities that would benefit the entire campus population. Our tasks included strategic analysis, market analysis, and architectural programming. The market analysis included focus groups and a Web-based survey to determine interest in recreational activities. It became clear that the facility would need a mix of components to satisfy the general campus population, including a natatorium, indoor track, competition gym, and wellness program space. Our plan was adopted by the college, the funds were raised, and in 2008 the $45 million, 175,000 SF Leonard Center was completed.
