Armory / Arena / Convocation Center Programming And Project Budgeting

In 2004 Drexel University wanted to explore the conversion of an on-campus armory into a facility dedicated to hosting varsity sports and other assembly events. This facility could provide a premier home for the school’s basketball teams, advance the sense of community on campus, and enable the university to compete for outside touring events. B&D was retained to explore the feasibility of this project, and to provide context for this effort we completed an analysis of comparable facilities and collected program, construction, and operation information. Working with the school and its architects, we then developed three building programs and associated budgets. In each case, the building program provided a home facility for the basketball teams and a venue capable of hosting touring events, graduation ceremonies, and other outside events. Upon completion of our study, the university initiated ownership rights negotiations for the state-owned armory.
